If earlier was our protagonist realizing the future and trying to avoid it, his inability to actually off himself and escape from the Hell that he finds himself in has jaded his thoughts. He’s returned to drugging himself into a stupor and has become a darker person, but still with a deeper desire to save those around him. But he feels himself changing in this environment, and with his awareness of the things around him, he fears that he might end up like them, or worse! He’s afraid, he’s changing, but he’s also looking for ways to change the status quo and to escape this prison that he’s in.
